This is an interesting trend in student media right now – other college newspapers are pushing email interviews to the wayside in favor of face-to-face interviews. Kudos to the student journalists making this important decision.
The Shorthorn’s policy on email interviews is and remains simple, as it has for the last several years: We don’t do them, unless the editor in chief has approved their use in advance of the interview. Why? Email interviews lack personality and spontaneity, it’s never clear just who is responding (it could be anyone writing on that person’s behalf), and responses could be taken incorrectly because an immediate followup is not possible. These are just a few of many reasons not to conduct interviews by email.
