Link of the Day: The Dirty Dozen

Check out this list of “12 Unforgivable writing mistakes” from Jacqui MacKenzie, a writer at a Chicago Internet marketing firm that provides social media services, SEO and more. I can think of a few to add to the list … but want to hear from you! (Copy editors, speak!)

  1. Using “over” and “around” incorrectly can be added. A personal pet peeve of mine is using the word “as” to mean “because” or something other than “at the same time as.” I see this a lot in sports stories. Example: “The team had a lot to work on as they had finished the last two games down by more than 10 points.” Misplaced modifiers and using pronouns when the noun isn’t clear (specifically if two nouns have been introduced in the previous sentence) are buttons, too.
