Find a job…training opportunity

Wanted to share this excellent opportunity to learn how to network and job hunt for work in communication. It’s put on by Hispanic Communicators DFW, and is open to any student who is interested in learning from professionals how to put yourself out there for the job market.

The cost is $10, and the workshop is in Denton on the UNT campus. It’s a 45-minute drive but will be worth it. Bonus: I’ll  reimburse the registration for any student actually goes and brings back notes. Let me know by Wednesday, April 4, if you’re planning to go. ALSO: They are awarding two $250 scholarships at the workshops … another reason to carpool up to Denton.

The Hispanic Communicators DFW will hold a journalism/communications workshop — Learn Secrets from the Pros — from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturday, April 9, in room 114 at the GAB (General Academic Building) at the University of North Texas. The workshop is open to all students and professionals.


One of the informative workshops is the one on “Landing your first job.” The workshop will address such topics as when do you start making contacts? Are internships important? How important are mentors?


The panelists include:
Danielle Abril, the Frisco/McKinney editor with neighborsgo, the community supplement of The Dallas Morning News; Danielle is a recent graduate of SMU.
Edna Ruano, a public relations manager with Carter Blood Care;
Josh Stevenson, a TV reporter with KXII 12 in Sherman;
Mark Maciesch, an assistant managing editor with neighborsgo, the community supplement of The Dallas Morning News; Mark works with young journalists and helps them better become writers and editors.

The workshop will help students in PR, print and broadcast put the wheels in motion to land that first job.

• Networking For Success
It’s not who you know, but who knows you that could land you that next opportunity or first job. We’ll show you how to promote yourself and get your name out there through networking techniques.
• Social Media on the Job
Why is it important for journalists and public relations professionals to effectively use social media?  How much social networking do you need to know for today’s communications jobs?
