I hope you’re ready for a great fall semester. We are! We’ll get started on fall editions of The Shorthorn on Sunday and Monday, when we’ll meet for staff orientation.
SUNDAY, AUG. 22, 1 p.m. to 6 p.m.
(New staff orientation. Previous staffers are welcome to join us, or get started on stories and prep work for the semester.)
Noon: Doors to The Shorthorn open.
1 p.m.: We’ll start payroll paperwork for all new staff.
2-4:30 p.m.: We’ll go over the ins and outs of how The Shorthorn operates.
4:30-6 p.m.: Get ready to write! Every new staffer will watch a press conference, interview and produce a short story.
MONDAY, AUG. 23, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
(All staff return to The Shorthorn.)
8 a.m.: Doors open.
8:45 a.m.: Doughnuts and coffee. Come chit-chat with your new colleagues before we get started for the day!
9:15 a.m.: All-staff meeting. Let’s get to know each other and what we can look forward to this semester.
10 a.m. to 5 p.m.: We’re pleased to say that we have several well-known professionals in the field here to talk to you about how you can do your job this semester. We’ll have a track for each area of the newsroom (reporters, copy editors and designers, photographers and online). You’ll get a full schedule soon, but in the mean time, here are just a few of the people you’ll hear from:
Mike Orren, founder of PegasusNews.com
Stephanie Allmon, Your Life editor at the Fort Worth Star-Telegram
Tom Fox, Dallas Morning News photographer
Darren Braun, freelance magazine photographer
Michael Currie, Fort Worth Star-Telegram presentation editor
Keeli Garza, Texas Motor Speedway social networking coordinator
Joy Tipping, Dallas Morning News features writer and copy editor
These are just a few of the great professionals who will speak to us Monday. Please look for the full schedule in your e-mail, so you can prepare questions for our guest speakers — many are former Shorthorn-ers!
TUESDAY AND WEDNESDAY
We’re off and running, starting production on the Thursday issue of The Shorthorn. You’ll work with your editors on your assignments and expectations for the first several issues.
We can’t wait to see you!
