How do you self edit?

I’m putting together a cheat sheet for self editing. Before I do, though, I’m interested in your personal process for self-editing. List what you do to your copy, photos or pages in the comments below, and I’ll add them to my list.
Thanks!

  1. After I finish writing my story I go back to make sure everything is in order. (most important at the top, least at the bottom.)

I then go back and attempt to make my sentences shorter and more concise. I look for prepositional phrases that can be taken out and I try to replace passive sentences.

After that, I check names, facts, ect.

Reading the story out loud is the last step before I turn it in. When I read out loud I look for missing words, awkwardly constructed sentences and typos.

There’s a little bit more to my process but this is an outline of what goes through my mind while I write.
